We are putting together a small
dedication to Major Tommy Bostick and Sgt. Mark Stone to be displayed at
the Legion Hall. Sweet Mesquite will be making a wooden plaque with 'For
God and Country' on it. Pictures of both soldiers and brief military
history and poem dedicated by Betty Strand in honor of Post Commander
Allyn Rub's service to his country will be included.
Who We Are and What We Do
Auxiliary members believe in the ideals and
principles of America’s founding fathers and pledge to foster
patriotism, preserve and defend the Constitution, promote allegiance to
God and Country, and uphold the basic principles of freedom of religion,
freedom of expression and freedom of choice. The Auxiliary embodies the
spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace and continues
to stand firmly behind America today, as it did when the organization
was first founded.
Initially, the Auxiliary was organized by concerned women who took on
the day-to-day responsibilities of life when their male family members
went across sea during World War I. Aware of the many fatherless
families and the needs of returning veterans, Auxiliary women vowed to
continue their supportive roles when the veterans of World War I founded
The American Legion in 1919. Auxiliary members today are wives, mothers,
sisters, daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters of these
courageous veterans. Some members are veterans themselves.
The Auxiliary has conceived and implemented hundreds of programs for
veterans, their families, young people and the community at large. Many
programs have been expanded, creating commonly accepted institutions
within the community and nation.
Two of the American Legion Auxiliary’s showcase programs are Girls State
and Girls Nation. Both are intended for young women entering their
senior year in high school with an interest in local, state and federal
government. As a result of participation in these programs, these young
women take responsibility for good citizenship and develop an
understanding of government.
In addition to the Girls State and Girls Nation programs, the Auxiliary
takes part in many community service projects and activities, while
providing a focal point for citizens’ involvement within their own
communities. The Auxiliary raises more than $18 million every year and
reinvests these funds in VA medical centers and community programs.
Thousands of hours are devoted to crime prevention, instructing
children, elderly and the general public on safety and protection within
the community. The Auxiliary supports programs for drug and alcohol
abuse, missing children, teen suicide and teen pregnancy while working
with organizations like the Children’s Miracle Network and Red Cross.
Auxiliary volunteers are the backbone of assistance in 171 VA Medical
Centers. These volunteers not only provide diversion and entertainment
for patients, but assist the hospital staff in physical and
psychological therapy. There are more than 20 programs nationwide that
receive support and financial aid from the American Legion Auxiliary,
and the Auxiliary is a national co-sponsor of the National Veterans
Creative Arts Festival.
Along with The American Legion, the Auxiliary has helped to lead the
movement to return to the people their right to protect the American
Flag from physical acts of desecration. The American Legion Family is
working in Washington for passage of a Constitutional amendment to help
protect and preserve the fabric of the nation.
The services of the American Legion Auxiliary directly and indirectly
touch the lives of all Americans. With the philosophy of "Service, not
Self," the American Legion Auxiliary develops a strong spirit of
volunteerism in its members, who have joined together in the fellowship
of giving to others.
Few people realize that:
- The
Auxiliary and the Legion are often centers for community and civic
activities in mid-America, and provide a focal point for citizens'
involvement.
- The
Auxiliary raises more than $18 million every year and reinvests
those funds in VA medical centers and community programs.
- Thousands
of hours are devoted to crime prevention programs, instructing
children, the elderly and the general public on safety, crime
prevention and protection within the community.
- Auxiliary
volunteers are the backbone of assistance in the 171 VA Medical
Centers.
- They not
only provide diversion and entertainment for patients, but assist
the hospital staff in physical and psychological therapy, clerical
and many other duties that would otherwise cost American taxpayers
millions of dollars.
- The
Auxiliary deals with issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, missing
and abused children, teen suicide and teen pregnancy. Its services
touch the lives of all Americans directly or indirectly.
- More than
20 nationwide programs receive support and financial aid from the
American Legion Auxiliary.

Unit 370 Auxiliary Newsletter
Hello Ladies of the
Auxiliary;
A new year is upon us.
It’s time for New Year Resolutions. What kind of resolutions are you
making; stop smoking, lose weight maybe. I have a couple of resolutions
that are easier to obtain. These resolution ideas are: attend our
meetings once a month, keep our soldiers in your prayers, send a note to
a soldier, send a note to a family member of a soldier, and send a note
to our adoptee Leticia at the VA Nursing Home. Take the time to be sure
they know we care. Show your pride and be sure they know you are proud
of them.
As an Iraq vet’s parent
wrote in USA Today in the article entitled “As a soldier’s mother”. The
family members also hold such pride in their hearts. Only a select few
in this country have what it takes to do what you are doing. Even if you
didn’t volunteer to go to war, you knew that you could be sent. You had
the courage to take that chance and to go when called.” The families of
our soldier’s need us in order to get through this difficult time.
Our last meeting went
very well.
Business discussed:
1. Not interested in
Girls State.
2. We will purchase
shirt to have to wear to the convention. Red shirts with stars on
shoulder. Auxiliary will pay then each member will reimburse the fund
for the cost of their shirts. If unable to afford members will help or
fund will.
3. Price for new flags
and accessories will cost approx. $170.00
4. Scholarship form to
be handed out at Cherokee, CASA, and Llano High (only 1 student will be
chosen.)
5. Picture of our
adoptee from the VA Leticia was shown to all. Christmas gifts were
delivered. Phone call to Carla confirmed the receiving of gifts and
thanks.
Executive meeting begins
at 5:30pm (anyone holding an office or title)
Regular meeting begins
at 6:00pm
Dinner begins at 6:30om
More information on the
convention to following. I really need everyone to attend each meeting
we must make decisions and I must have your person there to vote.
Thank you so much

2009 Newsletter
Hello Ladies;
A big thank you
to all of you who attended, the meeting in November. We all enjoyed a
wonderful Thanksgiving meal together.
Those who do not
know; we are celebrating 90 years of “Service Not Self.” Our vision is
enhancing the quality of life for our veterans, their families, and our
communities. Very few organizations or companies can boast of a 90-year
history. We Can!
Our organization,
however, is not growing. How will we be able to serve the needs of our
current Military forces and their families? What will we be able to do
in the next ten years? I want us to be a team. Each being a part of a
team that moves forward with new ideas and lots of plans for the future.
We each have a responsibility to let people know who we are, what we do,
and how we can make a difference in the community! I ask you all to
reconnect and energize our organization so we will be able to continue
to meet our purpose that was established 90 years ago.
This being said I
want to ask each of you why are you a part of this organization? Whether
you belong for personal fulfillment or pride, it should be a commitment
to a calling that is bigger than ourselves. Do we tell others about the
Auxiliary? Do you share what we do? Communication is indeed THE tool for
promoting who we are and why we matter. We are important and therefore,
each of you are very important. Reaching out to military families and
veterans to be sure they do not worry about having to live at poverty
levels.
We need members
and resources to promote patriotism and to advocate for all veterans.
Our mission after 90 years has not changed and is just as important
today in the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan as it was in the days of
WWI, WWII, Korea, Panama, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. Our men & women are
still serving to preserve our freedoms and our safety, and families on
the homefront are still concerned for their loved ones and in need of
support, just as they were in the past. Veterans are still returning
home to face the difficult task of returning home to civilian life. They
are counting on us! We need to reconnect with our members, our veterans,
our Legion Family, our potential younger members and our communities.
YOU are the best
ambassadors for the American Legion Auxiliary and what we do for
Veterans!
We accomplished a
lot at the last meeting.
1)
We will start a Coupon
Clipping Program for the families of our current veterans so please clip
those coupons and bring them to the meeting with you on December 17th.
2)
At the last meeting it
was agreed that we would adopt someone from the VA Nursing Home. Isabel
from the VA called about our adoptee. Her name is
Leticia Cruz-Robinson, a retired Army
Nurse. Her information is as follows: 5Ft 5in tall, Weight 212, Shoe
Size 9DD, Pants size 18, Blouse size XXL, and she has pierced ears. She
loves hamburgers, movies, cats. Hobbies: embroidery and painting. She
has begun to take an interest in taking care of herself, make-up etc.
3)
We want to ask Tommie
Meyers about a current service woman to nominate from our area for
ServiceWoman of the year.
4)
Llano Military News and
Support Our Troops is meeting on Dec 1st at 5:30 to assemble
care parkage for the troops. We need gift cards from major stores to
help the families mainly and other items as well for both
families and soldiers.
5)
We will purchase new
stands and new flags for our Auxiliary Post.
6)
District Meeting will be
here on March 20 and 21 of 2010. At this time meals will cost about or
appox. $15.00. The Auxiliary will meet at Inman’s Kitchen who will
furnish the meals.
7)
Terry Mikulenka will DJ
the evening celebrations.
8)
Happy Hour will also be
apart of the Convention. More information to follow later.
9)
There was discussion at
National about increasing dues. This was voted down therefore, dues will
still be $20 a year.
Our next meeting
will be December 17th.

November 2009 Newsletter
Hello everyone Carla here once again. Well, the
meeting went very well. We want to welcome Suzanne Klee, Linda Poe
and Elaine Ewalt as new members of our auxiliary. We had some
familiar faces return last meeting and we were so glad to have them
back.
We want to extend our heart felt sorrow to
our Vice-President Cindy Hinesly on the loss of her husband,
Garland, and member of our post. Please give her a hug and let her know
you care and see if she needs anything. We love you Cindy!
We will have the Spring Convention here in
Llano. The Auxiliary voted to hold their meeting at Inman’s Kitchen if
possible. The meal and snacks will be served there. So we will have
meeting and meals in one location.
We will be sending Christmas money to the VA
but we also will be checking into adopting someone from the VA
for the whole year as well.
I updated everyone on the Llano Military News
Group and their care packages.
Our current soldiers would like pictures of Llano
people and place which some have not seen in a while. Kari Miller
will be getting a DVD together for us with pictures, video, Christmas
cards, and music all included. If you would like to donate to this
wonderful cause contact Tommi Myers or myself. We also have boxes
sitting all over town. There will be boxes sitting out in the Legion if
you want to bring items to the next meeting.
Items needed: snack foods, gift cards for
the families of the service personnel (wife & children). Examples of
these items are lip balm, powders, lotion, cookies, nuts, candy,(not
chocolate), jerky, fruit packs, microwavable pasta, soup, canned meats,
individual drink mixes, card games, socks, magazines, puzzle/word search
books and baby wipes. Keep in mind postage cost $600 last time.
We approved the forms for our yearly scholarship.
We will give these applications to Llano ISD, Cherokee ISD, Cherokee
Home and CASA(Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Highland Lakes
Area) [CASA workers with CPS and with children who are taken from bad
homes]
Next meeting on Nov. 19th
at 6pm we will be going over our bylaws and updating them.
Please come and be apart of our organization. I
want to get to know each and every one of you. If you have ideas for
improving our Post I truly want to hear those ideas. So come and share!
If you need a ride give me a call and I will
pick you up or find someone to pick you up. In this Post we are all
brothers and sisters and the Legion and the Auxiliary will be working
together to build our post.
As far as Thanksgiving dinner Allyn & I will be
furnishing a chicken or Turkey breast with dressing. Please bring a side
dish and lets give thanks together. I always so enjoy seeing see of
you at the meetings and enjoying a meal with you all.
