Armed Forces Day Celebration

Courthouse Square Friday, May 20 at 11:00 a.m.
Frank Griggs American Legion Post 370 is hosting an
Armed Forces Day celebration on the Court House Square Lawn. In addition
to the posting of the National an State flags by the Highland lakes
Honor Guard, all Service Branch flags will be posed along with the
POW/MIA, Wounded in Action and Killed in Action flags commemorating and
honoring all those who have served honorably in the Armed Forces of the
United States of America. Several dignitaries will be present along with
special guests and entertainment. It’s all free so come all and bring
the family!
The Llano Military Group is planning to hold a
rally that afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on the Court House lawn and are
working on signs to display the names of all 55 active duty military
from Llano County that can be reused annually.
The group is also planning an Armed Forces day Ball
at the American Legion Post Home in Llano on Saturday, May 21. A local
artist will be there to entertain and a silent auction is planned to
help raise funds to support their worthwhile activities. Postage alone
for the Group runs about $900 per mailing. Then there is then cost of
the signs as well.
Chairperson of the Llano Military News Group is
Cindy Burleson who also has a son, Brandon Fountain now serving in the
U. S. Army and stationed in Afghanistan. Brandon is a 2004 graduate from
Llano High School.

The American Legion was chartered by
Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans’
organization - a community-service organization which now numbers
approximately 2.8 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000
American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55
Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia,
Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the
Philippines. Post 370 is a member of the Department of Texas.
The American Legion, Department of
Texas is made up of over 90,000 Legionnaires in 526 Posts all across
Texas.
The Department is Divided into four
Division with a Division Commander elected annually in the spring to
serve a one year term to work on membership and to coordinate the
activities of the Posts and Legionnaires within that geographical area.
Post 370 is a member of Division 4.
Each Division is divided into
districts with a total of twenty-three Districts in The Department of
Texas, each with a District Commander and other such officers as
determined by each District. Post 370 is a member of District 21

Post 370's Namesake
Corporal William Frank Griggs, born
September 14, 1894, died November 8, 1918. He gave his life for his
country.”
William Frank (RED) Griggs entered
the service in Llano County in 1917 along with 15 other young men. Among
the group was Marion Chew who is living at Care Inn in Llano. According
to Chew, another one of the men was Allen S. Johnson, a local banker now
deceased.
The men received training at Camp
Travis in San Antonio and were part of the 90th Division Co.
2 360th Infantry in the American Exp. Forces.
William Frank Griggs was killed in France three days
before the armistice was declared on November 11, 1918. The Llano
American Legion Post was named in his honorMonthly
meetings are held every fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the
Post Home: 200 Legion Street, Llano, Texas (One block north of the Llano
River bridge and one block west of State Highway 16) and includes a free
BBQ dinner with all the trimmings!

meeting, time and date. Remember, Frank Griggs Post 370 is what you, the
members, make of it. Have a voice and a vote by attending regular
scheduled meetings. Mark them on your calendar. Please call the Post
home should you need transportation to a meeting or other Legion event.
